On December 29, 2017, Chana Masala opened its doors in Hin Kong, Koh Phangan, becoming more than just a restaurant—it became a heartfelt project for Nueng Suwanee, a Thai owner passionate about sharing her family’s love for Indian cuisine with the community.
Nueng’s journey to Koh Phangan began in 2012 when she attended a yoga retreat on the island. Coming from the bustling city of Bangkok, where she managed a Thai silver jewellery export business, Koh Phangan offered her peace and balance. By 2017, after purchasing land surrounded by coconut trees in Hin Kong, Nueng felt this was where she belonged. With her husband, Moti, who had spent years on the island, the idea for Chana Masala was born from their longing for the comforting flavours of Indian food they had come to cherish.
Nueng’s love for Indian cuisine was sparked during a 2010 yoga retreat in Rishikesh, India. The nourishing, easy-to-digest vegetarian meals inspired her transition to a vegetarian lifestyle. Wanting to bring these authentic flavours to Koh Phangan, she and Moti collaborated with skilled chefs from North India, importing spices and equipment to ensure every dish reflected the soul of Indian cooking.
Chana Masala is built on a simple yet profound mission: to create authentic Indian vegetarian dishes using fresh, local vegetables and high-quality Indian spices. Free from additives and MSG, every masala gravy is made in-house daily, ensuring freshness and flavour. Each dish is prepared to order, offering meals that are wholesome and made with care.
Today, Chana Masala is more than a restaurant—it’s a gathering place where locals and travellers share meals made with intention and love. Nueng and Moti hope every visitor feels the warmth and authenticity that defines their journey, a story etched into the walls of their original Hin Kong space.
